Boiler Leaking or Making Loud Noises? Safe Checks Before You Call

Start with safety, not diagnosis

A leak or a new noise does not tell you exactly what has failed. The useful first step is to work out whether there is an immediate safety concern, then collect a few clear observations without opening the boiler or attempting a repair.

If you smell gas, suspect a gas leak or feel unwell around the appliance, leave the property and contact the appropriate gas emergency service from a safe place. Do not operate electrical switches or try to investigate the boiler. If water is reaching electrical equipment, keep clear and do not touch the appliance or nearby switches.

If there is no immediate danger, use the boiler’s normal controls to switch it off if you can do so safely. Do not remove the casing, adjust gas components or keep restarting it to see whether the fault clears. For safety, leave gas work and internal boiler repairs to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What you can check without opening the boiler

Look, but do not dismantle

From a safe distance, look for where the water appears to be coming from. Is it beneath the boiler, near a visible pipe or coming from somewhere else in the room? Note whether the leak is a drip, a steady flow or dampness that has spread across the floor. Do not reach behind the appliance or touch wet electrical parts to get a better view.

If you can identify a clearly accessible water stop tap without going near the boiler or wet electrics, turning it off may limit further water escape. If you are unsure which tap it is, cannot reach it safely or the leak is spreading, do not force anything. Tell us what you can see when you contact us.

Read the display and controls

Make a note of any fault code or warning shown on the boiler display. Write it down exactly, including any letters, and note whether the display is blank or changing. You can also check whether the room thermostat or heating programmer is set as you expect. These observations do not diagnose the fault, but they help distinguish a control setting from a boiler that is displaying a fault.

If you already know how to read the pressure gauge, record what it shows. Avoid topping up the system simply because the reading looks low. The correct action depends on the appliance and the fault; repeatedly adding water can conceal an underlying problem rather than resolve it.

Describe the noise precisely

Try to note when the sound happens: when the boiler starts, while it is running, when hot water is used or after it stops. Record whether it is a short click, a repeated knock, a hum, a whistle or a bubbling sound. If you can safely make a short recording from outside the boiler casing, it may help explain what you heard, but do not stay beside an appliance that seems unsafe.

The timing and character of a noise are clues, not a diagnosis. Different faults can produce similar sounds, and a sound may come from the heating system rather than the boiler itself. Avoid removing panels or touching pipes to try to track it down.

What to tell us when you call

Give a concise account of what changed and when. Include the display code, the pressure reading if you could safely read it, where you saw water and whether the noise happens during heating or hot water use. Mention any recent change you have noticed, such as the heating stopping or the boiler switching itself off. You do not need to decide what part has failed.

This information helps us understand the situation before assessing the boiler. Here at M & M Plumbing and Gas Services Limited, we carry out boiler repairs across Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas. Our Gas Safe registration is relevant to work on gas appliances, but a check from outside the casing is not a substitute for a proper inspection.

Know where to stop

A safe check means observing controls, displays and visible signs. It does not mean opening the appliance, testing electrical parts, changing internal settings or attempting to silence a noise by taking components apart. If the boiler keeps shutting down, water continues to escape or the noise is severe or worsening, leave it switched off and seek advice rather than repeatedly restarting it.

For an overview of our Boiler Repair service, see the service page. When you contact us, the observations you have gathered can help us understand what you are experiencing. The diagnosis and any repair should be left to a qualified engineer.
